The Monterey

This Monterey style fishing boat, sometimes called the Monterey Clipper, was a boat that took on it's own identity in the San Francisco Bay area of California. Fashioned after the Italian boats of yore called feluccas, they were used in the early days for salmon gilnetting in the Sacramento River. As time progressed, the style changed to adapt to newer methods, gas engines, and availability of fish.

Plans for this boat basically just covered the hull design. The rest of the boat design was left up to the builder, or modeler, to meet the conditions required. I built this boat around the Vivian engine, similar to the type used in these boats in the 1940s.

The postcard below was not dated, but it only called for a one cent stamp. It shows all the Monterey or felucca style fishing boats in the harbor.

The engine was modeled after a 1933 Vivian gasoline boat engine. The body is made of wood and painted. The parts are copper tubing and brass. The engine runs and is powered by the electric motor and battery that powers the model.
